West Side Toury (Tucson, AZ - 04/27/10)
I feel like a chapter of my life has closed. It’s been about 13 years since last seeing a very influential person in my life. This guy schooled me on “popular” music, taught me some songs on guitar, let me jam with him in front of people. All this, then one day he was gone. I heard stories of where he went and how he got there but they were all second hand. I wanted to know what happened to him. Where had this important person that helped shape my life gone?
We woke up in a Wallmart parking lot in El Paso, TX and got to Tucson after visiting an odd roadside attraction called “the thing”. The night prior to this trip I had spoken with a guy over Facebook that was friends with the old mystery friend I mentioned earlier. He said that he works with him in Tucson and would like to hang out if we got into town early. I ended up text messaging him on a whim on our way in to see if we could score a meal from the pizza place they both work at. He happily obliged. So we parked and met Steven, our road angel and I reconnected with my friend from long ago. He told me the story of what happened and how he ended up in AZ. I felt like a big mystery had been uncovered in my life and that I could rest easy about it now. Oh, by the way, when we walked into the restaurant they were pumping our new single, No Comfort. It was hilarious. We were just outside, being self indulgent listening to our on music over the radio, eating the most amazing pizza I’ve had in a while and drinking beers… all free mind you.
Steven took us to his place where we showered up and got ready to play. We then played the show to a handful of people and were able to, after much debate, get our guarantee. It was tricky because two bands dropped off the bill and they were counting on them to bring in more money. We were somehow able to get it and then move on to Scottsdale, AZ where Tom’s dad lives. It’s an amazing house with a pool and all kinds of lavish, amazing things.
