PARACHUTE MUSICAL

West Side Toury (San Antonio - 04/20/10 - 04/21/10)

Tom here, recalling events that took place over the last two days in San Antonio, TX. We arrived Tuesday evening at Jigger’s (worst venue name ever, nice folks though) and enjoyed our glorious reunion with friends and tour-mates The Winter Sounds. TWS, who had just returned from playing in Mexico, told their stories of the road thus far, and after a few minutes of conversation it was as if we had time traveled back to August `09 (our last tour with them). We loaded into “Jigger’s” and met Clay and Joel, two nice guys from the band Young Machines, who we shared the stage with both nights in San Antonio. Young Machines are a sweet band, and were gracious enough to put us up both nights we were in town (many, many thanks to them!). The show was a lot of fun, and culminated with an impromptu “dance party” in the parking lot to Wiz Khalifa’s Kush & Orange Juice, in honor of 420!

We woke up the next day very hungry and headed over to Crave Burger, who’s owner, Mike, we had met the night before at Jogger’s. Mike liked our set, and told us to come by for a hooked up meal. And hook it up he did. Crave Burger is the jam. Later on, we loaded into our venue for the evening, The Falls (there’s a kewl waterfall behind the bar). There was a lot of downtime before playing, and with some extra change in my pocket, I took it upon myself to play Toto’s “Roseanna” and Metallica’s “Sad But True” on the jukebox. I have great, great respect for Ben Jacoby, who was sitting behind his drum kit during “Roseanna”, and had the restraint and maturity NOT to play along to Jeff Porcaro’s seminal shuffle drum beat. What a responsible young man. And thorough. Anyway, the show was fun, and afterward we were super hungry. Fortunately for us, there was a taco place next door called Los Roberto’s 24 Hour Taco Shop (the Mexican food in San Antonio is amazing BTW). Roberto’s tacos were out of control- cheap and GOOD. A really cool and funny guy named Seth bought us Cokes (no high fructose Cokes, mind you)- a treat we normally bypass in order to save a dollar. Being able to swig some coke after scarfing down those delicious tacos was a honour and privilege.

That’s about it. San Antonio was a fun town and we met some awesome people. Major shout out again to Clay and Joel for the hospitality. Also to Crave Burger and Los Roberto’s 24 Hour Taco Shop. We’re pulling into Austin now, quickly approaching Atom “Wicked Celtics” Andersen’s house. Stay tuned.

LOVE
TOM
