No Comfort Release Tour - Enid, OK (Day 4)
It was another six + hour drive to the next city, Enid Oklahoma. The first leg of this tour has been riddled with them… they’re kind of draining and I’m looking forward to the short rides to come down through Texas.
We had a decent morning considering the awful sleep that most of the various band members had at The Legacy Hotel in Little Rock (the floor sleepers that is). Some have been battling back illness, especially Andrew who has been mentioning a sore throat and achy body on and off. We woke up late because, as I mentioned in the last entry, the hotel oddly allows people to take part in 1:00pm check outs free of charge?! The only downside was that we missed the continental breakfast, a necessity to travelers such as ourselves. Free food can NEVER be passed up. I called down to see if we could snag whatever leftovers they had but alas, they closed up shop and were already preparing for lunch. Somewhat in disbelief, I made my way to the lobby on the other side of the hotel to scope it out. Sure enough, the cereal bar had NOT been cleared, the coffee was still hot and the fruit basket was plentiful with apples and oranges. I ate to my fill and took ten or eleven various fruits for those struggling to wake up. Some of the others caught on and took part in the leftover breakfast buffet. Afterward, we started the long drive to Enid, OK.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect. A Monday night in a town that we’ve never visited is usually disastrous… I have to say, I was shocked at the attendance. Let me back up a little bit though.
The car ride to Enid was VERY productive. I had it in my head that we would pay homage to our favorite fast food restaurant, Taco Bell. I decided the song we were to “create” would be written to the tune of Six Pence None The Richer’s, Kiss Me. We all took time on our personal verse and collaborated on a chorus. I have to say, it’s fucking glorious. I plan on us playing this song on stage at some point this tour.
We arrived in Enid, feeling a bit disheartened by the small town’s highlights: The Bike Store, a YMCA and a 50’s throw back bar. We were early so we bravely headed into the 50’s throw back bar, aptly titled The Classic Club. It was pretty much an old folks kind of joint. We waked in and couldn’t help but stare at the pictures of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, James Dean and the like that bravely dressed the yellowed-by-smoke walls. There were four or five customers who all silently watched Wheel Of Fortune. Ben and Andrew paid for beers, shocked to see that the alcohol content was a measly 3.2 percent. Oddly enough, the bar served liquor, which flaunted no alcohol cut back. The bar obviously dated its “actual” era by the Bud Dry signs hanging around the place. “Does that even exist anymore?” asked Andrew. No reply from the bar tender… maybe I shouldn’t have ordered a cup of water. At one point Andrew, who was slowly getting sucked into the Wheel Of Fortune glow coming of the television overhead, yelled out the answer to a puzzle, “Fleetwood Mac and Cheese!”. I thought he was going to get his throat slit. We paid and left.
The Underground in Enid was nuts. There were a bunch of kids there who went crazy when we played. It was my best show in recent memory and I was so pumped by the love we were shown. We met this awesome guy named Tyler. He lives in Norman, OK where he attends OU. When he invited us to stay at his place, about an hour and half towards our next destination, we hopped at the chance. It was a quaint studio dorm that we ended up having all to ourselves since he decided to stay at some chicks house… Go Tyler!
Last night was an absolute blast and I still can’t believe things got that crazy on a Monday night. I cannot WAIT to see what other surprises are in store for us on the rest of this tour.
