Brooklyn, NY - 09/13/09
Waking up to Pancakes is NEVER a bad thing… Allison Weiss would agree. A good friend of ours made that little gift possible. She also made the gift of slumber possible by opening up her home to us. It’s amazing to experience the type hospitality we do while on the road. I feel like there is always a friend in the audience or someone who has a soft spot for the traveler. Thank god!
So we woke up around ten. Feeling pretty lazy after 4-7 pancakes, we decided it was too long to walk all the way around the building. The result: handing our belongings over her first story railing (emo band name?). After a great breakfast and bag hand off, we headed to Brooklyn, NY. Our pre-show hangout was at Ben’s lady friend’s house. We ate grilled cheese sandwiches and drank coffee on the roof of her apartment building. Looking out on Brooklyn mid day with the sun shining was a treat for all of us after the long, traffic ridden drive.
We’ve played Brooklyn a number of times now. Tonight was a familiar venue with a new name (formerly Galapagos Art Gallery, now Public Assembly). We had great sound and a decent turnout, which is always nice so far from home. Wakey Wakey headlined and Keegan Dewitt opened. After the show we headed to Wakey Wakey’s hometown bar called Matchless. On the way we passed a factory that makes loaf after loaf of bread that gets shipped to its various destinations the next morning. It’s not “for sale” at the factory but they leave the back door open so the workers can pedal three dollar loafs. After hanging at the bar and slowly being coaxed into playing a few songs on guitar at an open mic night at the bar, Tom and I bought a loaf. We ate half on the way back to our beds. It was warm and a serious treat that topped off an awesome night in Brooklyn. I loved playing some songs I never get to play. Especially because it was in a setting that I was slightly uncomfortable in. I love feeling out of my element. I’d like to think that coping with that makes me better… but I could just be full of shit? The world will never know.
Thanks,
Josh
