Atlanta - Day 1 PM / Winter Sounds Tour
Atlanta, GA – Day 1
Every once and awhile things go our way. After leaving Nashville in the pouring down rain for the first day of another tour, it was easy to think that “things” wouldn’t. We are out for ten days with The Winter Sounds. Five of those days will be spent with a cool lady named Jennifer Justice. She’s writing a book about the “modern gypsy” and asked if she could observe PM on tour. Aside from PM, she plans on writing about a funnel cake vendor traveling with a carnival, a traveling salesman, a trucker and others. She’s very fun and interested in what we’re doing… for some reason. She’ll be sleeping on floors and riding around in the van from venue to venue, Taco Bell to Taco Bell.
When we pulled up to the Drunken Unicorn in ATL we unloaded and sound checked. It was awesome to start a tour with a semi-packed house and great sound. It was also great to be in the black after day one. I thought we played well too, especially for having not rehearsed before leaving. Tonight we’re staying at a nice house in Atlanta, a friend of ours. We’ll be fed and sleeping in beds… a rare event I promise. I feel this could skew ones view of what being on tour is like for us. Nice houses that are packed with beds and food are an anomaly… so is being in the black.
It wasn’t all biscuits and gravy though. As I mentioned earlier, it rained leaving Nashville and it didn’t stop… ATL poured too. When we got to ATL and were parked for an hour or so we hopped back into the van to do our vocal warm up. It was at that point that Ben noticed what appeared to be a leak in the van. It was bad, very bad… there was a puddle of water on the floor of the van, my sleeping bag is soaked… you get the idea. Ben shoved some paper napkins in between the window and the window frame and it seemed to solve the problem momentarily. I couldn’t believe that on day one there was already a van problem. We really REALLY need all the money we make so we can record a new record but the van always seems to be sucking it up. I was quickly reminded that it could have been the transmission… I’m much calmer about the whole ordeal now.
Tom just told me to write, “I’m weary… write that… I’m tired”. He’s been the driver of the day so I feel okay about giving him that space in this blog. Regardless of his weariness right now, we had an amazing night. Ben did however slam his finger shut in my Rhodes case. Other then that and the gaping hole that has appeared on our roof out of nowhere, I think I speak for all of us when I say that we had an amazing ATL experience… thank you everyone who came out… stay tuned!
Love,
Josh
p.s. – we just got to the house we’ll be staying at tonight… there is a homemade breakfast casserole in the refrigerator for tomorrow morning, we just slammed back about half of an Oreo pie and one of the residents just brought us back Waffle House… Now that’s love.
